SEO Explained : Like ordering food online

Today’s session was about the 3 steps of how a search engine works. Honestly, most of us came in nervous—SEO sounds so complicated, and on top of that, we’re still stuck searching for the “perfect keyword” (yes, the long-tail one with SV 10 and SD 30). It feels like ordering food when you don’t even know what you’re craving.

But once we connected it to something we all do—ordering food online—the steps made complete sense.

1. Crawling

Imagine opening Swiggy or Zomato. The app “crawls” through hundreds of restaurants near you, scanning menus. Search engines do the same: bots (spiders) scan websites across the internet, collecting details about pages.

2. Indexing

Now, all those restaurant menus are stored neatly in the app. Next time you type “Burger,” the app doesn’t need to go find menus again—it already has them indexed. Similarly, search engines organize all the crawled website data into a giant library called the index.

3. Ranking

Finally, when you search for “Best cheesy pizza”, the app shows the top-rated places first. Google works the same way — ranking pages so that the most relevant and trustworthy ones show up at the top of the results.

Why It Feels Real

Keywords and SEO terms make us feel overwhelmed. Just like when we are browsing through too many food options online. Taking the right decision isn't easy, but it gets easier once you know how the system operates.

My Final thoughts

I feel SEO isn’t rocket science. It’s just like ordering food:

  • The app (search engine) scans menus (crawling)
  • Stores them (indexing)
  • Shows you the best options. (ranking—all the rating stars the customers give)

And yes, while we’re still panicking over which “keyword dish” to choose, at least we now understand how the system brings it to our plate. Step by step, we’re getting there.
